Our family-run VDP- estate AUGUST ESER cultivates 27 acres of single vineyard sites along the Rhine river. Our aim is to create authentic Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, which get their distinctive character on the south facing slopes of the Rheingau valley/Germany.
You can find our winery (built around 1680) in the center of the old town of Oestrich, where we are the tenth generation of winemakers dedicated to making wines of quality. The wines mature in our tunnel vault cellar.

As you can see, we have certain seals of quality. In addition we are a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter) an association of high standard and quality wineries since 1971.
We invite you to enjoy our fruity, aromatic, dry and typical Rheingau Rieslings.
Kind regards,
Dodo Freiherr zu Knyphausen and Désirée Eser Freifrau zu Knyphausen
„The key to Rheingau, key to Rielsing“
In 2007, after studying the wine business at Geisenheim University (Germany) and University of California, Davis (California, USA) and after different internships around the wine world, Désirée Eser Freifrau zu Knyphausen took over the winery from her parents, becoming the 10th generation winemaker and first female winemaker. Désirée runs the August Eser winery with her husband Dodo Freiherr zu Knyphausen, who also studied at Geisenheim. They both live the dream of winemaking.
Everyone can do their part. Here is a short look at our commitment to sustainability
Everything starts in the vineyard: Healthy vines from root to leaf
Through continuous greening, we support natural soil fertility and humus formation.
We have long refrained from using fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to combat animal pests.
We also consider energy conservation important: We support the cooling of our wines through the natural night coolness and our deep, temperature-stable cellar. This saves energy and water resources.
With the help of solar panels, we support our hot water preparation, heating, and electricity consumption for over a decade now.
We are committed through regular sponsorship of various target groups: art and cultural promotion, medical research, environmental protection, child and youth work, and community work. It is close to our hearts, and we are happy to help.
Membership in VDP, the Rheingau Young Winemakers, Vinissima, and other associations helps us with future projects and visions.
Perhaps you have already noticed that we have been using "lighter" glass bottles for several years, which serves to save CO² during production and transport. Unfortunately, market research indicates that customers associate a heavier bottle with higher quality, but in our case it is evident: the content determines the quality, not the thickness of the glass bottle!
We avoid foreign low-cost providers for bottles, labels, capsules, etc. There is a simple explanation for this: quality, traceability, and short transport distances.
Since 2021, we have changed our cartons and are using a brand new patent for shipping boxes: the new design saves 45% of material, and the carton is made of pure paper without any plastic content. Very good for recycling. In general, we take back bottles and boxes and reuse them. However, please do not send empty boxes back via parcel service, as this makes no ecological sense.
We are continuously restoring our manor house in coordination with the monument protection authorities. The old building with clay and timber framing is romantic, but also labor-intensive to renovate. The historic roof has been and will continue to be covered with typical black slate.
Our winery has now been certified for its sustainability by "Fair Choice."
