The Rheingau is characterized by its geographic position with only south facing slopes and the lakelike river Rhine. The deep clay soils are well sustained with water although there is only a little rainfall (530 mm per year). This is because of the Rheingau hills and the humus development out of our cover crop management, which has been ongoing for two decades. The main focus is on keeping natural soil vitality. Practising close to nature combined with minimum yields is the base for quality, which is further improved by a late, selective hand harvest.
* Through research for soil texture, sun exposure, water supply etc. the Rheingau vineyard sites were analysed. Only the special and good sites or part of single sites were classified for the name “First Growth”.
Not only do vineyard factors and strict reduced yields have to fit, the wines have to pass a sensoric test by a professional jury.
You can recognize the “First Growth” wines by the three arches on a black background.
